Did you know there’s a place in the Bay Area where you can take an authentic gondola ride? Well, there is! Gondola Service or as I say in phonetic Italian “Gon-doe-lah Ser-vee-see-oh” is located on Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland.
Gondola rides have been available since the 80’s, 7 days a week, year round, weather permitting and by reservation only. While most take a ride to celebrate special events, others may just tie it into a fun evening out on the town in Oakland. Starting at just $45 couples, groups and oh-solo-me-oh’s can purchase a 30 minute, 55 minute or full night on the Lake.
Prime time for a gondola ride is evenings, as the sunsets and the lake waters calm. You’ll enjoy the Oakland cityscape, necklace of lights around Lake Merritt; while being serenaded with a couple of traditional Italian songs by your private gondolier.
If you care to bring a little bubbly or wine along on your ride, feel free to do so. The gondola company has a B.Y.O.B. policy when it comes to alcohol. A little wine, panoramic view of the surrounding hills, and city lights on a gondola is one memorable experience and a taste of the good life.
The gondolas are authentic hand crafted Venetian gondolas (not that I would know the difference). Originally crafted in Italy to shuttle around the wealthy (Venice’s version of the limo) and each is a work of art. Each gondola adorns a family crest, a status symbol or license plate or for gondolas in the early years. These gondolas are actually paddled and the gondolier uses what they call a “venetian rowing technique”. This was a beautiful, tranquil and smooth ride…right here in the Bay Area.
You romantic gondola ride includes few serenades, and if you’d like, some history on gondolas and facts about Lake Merritt and surrounding area. Your gondolier may even recommend a couple of great restaurants to check out after your ride.
While couples seem to be attracted to these Gondola rides, it’s also fun for families and small groups up to six passengers. If your group is larger than a few people, you can always commandeer a 2nd gondola for others in your party to be on the lake at the same time.
